Restorative Functions for Dental Assistants and Hygienists
Certification Course

A 120-hour certification course.

This course is approved for certification and training in Restorative Functions for dental auxiliaries in Board of Dentistry Rule 64B5-16.0051 and 64B6-16.0061.


Acceptance Criteria

Dental Assistants Must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a high school graduate or have a High School Equivalency Certificate.
  • Have a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certificate.
  • Be a graduate of a dental assisting program that is accredited by a dental accrediting entity recognized by the United States Department of Education or shall have received formal training in expanded duties.
  • Never had a dental assisting license suspended or revoked in any jurisdiction.
  • Within 24 months prior to being admitted to the mandatory training course, the Candidate must have documented proof of 2400 hours of clinical work experience in either a dental office or as an educator of dental assisting.

Dental Hygienists Must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a high school graduate or have a High School Equivalency Certificate.
  • Have a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certificate.
  • Have an unrestricted dental hygiene license from any U.S. state or territory.
  • Never had a dental hygiene license suspended or revoked in any jurisdiction.
  • Within 24 months prior to being admitted to the mandatory training course, the candidate must have documented proof of 2400 hours of clinical work experience in either:a dental office or
    • as an educator of a dental hygiene program or
    • be a graduate of a dental hygiene program, accredited by a dental accrediting entity recognized by the United States Department of Education, within 24 months prior to being admitted to the mandatory training course.

Description

This 6 month course provides the theoretical background for the pre-clinical operative technique course in the primary and adult dentitions.  Students receive instruction on a range of skills needed prior to beginning work on patient simulators (mannequins) and then move to clinical scenarios.  The material will be presented in lecture, laboratory, web-based, patient care and self-study format.

Certificates will be awarded upon demonstration of competency and satisfactory completion of written and clinical post-tests.


Objectives

To provide training for certification in the following restorative functions:

  • Know the classifications of cavity preparation design.
  • Understand the principles of restorations in the primary and permanent dentition
  • Understand the principles of stainless-steel crown (SSC) restorations and how to fit, adjust and cement SSC
  • Understand the principles of pulp protection for deep lesions (bases and liners)
  • Understand different types of current adhesives materials and its indications.
  • Learn different treatment options with adhesive restorations for Class I, II, III, IV and V (manipulation, protocols, and polymerization)
  • Learn how to manipulate, and restore teeth with amalgam for Class I, II and V
  • Learn how to place Resin Modified Glass Ionomer restoration in Class V and protective restorations.

All necessary supplies and instruments will be provided, however, please bring your own safety glasses or loupes if you need special glasses.

  • Suggested Texts: Art and Science of Operative Dentistry by Sturdevant, 7th Edition, Ritter, Boushell and Walter Elsevier (you may purchase textbook from Amazon or Elsevier)

This three phase participation course is designed to teach the auxiliary to perform expanded functions, including fabrication of provisional crowns.

Radiology for DA

Standard cancellation policy does not apply to this course. Effective January 1, 2019:

ABSENCES: Refunds, less a $50 administration fee, will be issued for registrants who cancel more than 30 days before the course starting date. A 50% refund will be issued for registrants who cancel less than 30 days before the course starting date. No refunds will be issued for registrants who cancel less than 14 days before the starting date.

Participants may phone the Continuing Education office to cancel, but a written request which includes the name and phone number of the person who paid for the course must be received by our office before a refund can be processed. This request must  be emailed to admin-cde@dental.ufl.edu.

Continuing Dental Education reserves the right to modify or cancel a course when circumstances warrant, including insufficient enrollment. Dates, course content, fees, or faculty will be changed only when unavoidable. If a course is already full when registrations are received, or if the course has been canceled, applicants will be notified and a full refund will be processed.

Continuing Dental Education cannot be responsible for non-refundable airfares or other expenses in the event of a course cancellation.
